Reflections on A.W. Tozer
"It is not a cheerful thought that millions of us who live in a land of Bibles, who belong to churches and labor to promote the Christian religion, may yet pass our whole life on this earth without once having thought or tried to think seriously about the being of God. Few of us have let our hearts gaze in wonder at the I AM, the self-existent Self the back of which no creature can think. Such thoughts are too painful for us. We prefer to think where it will do more good - about how to build a better mousetrap, for instance, or how to make two blades of grass grow where one grew before. And for this we are now paying a too heavy price in the secularization of our religion and the decay of our inner lives." (A.W. Tozer - The Knowledge of the Holy - Chapter 5)
A.W. Tozer's The Knowledge of the Holy dwells on the attributes of the Almighty God - the everlasting Father - the all-powerful Creator. In discussing the Self-existence of God, Tozer points out how we, in this land filled with opportunities to know God, spend little time gazing in awe at the majesty of Who He is - little time pondering the magnificence and immensity and depth of Yahweh - little time in slack-jawed awe at the selflessness of Yahweh to clothe Himself with humanity and suffer and die to redeem a people who for the most part think so little and so rarely of Him.
With God as an afterthought, this faith becomes little more than a regular event on a calendar of a thing to do, a place to go, a happening to attend. Our minds and hearts become hardened and worldly, no longer open to the whispers of the Spirit, the beckoning of the Father as He calls for you to follow Him. Then the church looks less and less like Yahweh and more and more like the world, and its impact dwindles and fades.
Through faith in Jesus, we are now children of God - heirs of an eternal inheritance, yet let us not dismiss or despise the greatness of Yahweh. He declares to us "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts." (Isaiah 55:8-9) Rather, let us spend time in worship before the great I AM. Let us declare to our Father that Holy is His Name, Holy is His character, Holy are His actions, Holy is He and only He is Holy.
We praise You O Lord - Our God and King - Creator of the universe. We praise You for Who You are - for Your majesty, Your greatness, Your love and compassion. Who are we that You so loved us - that You so love us still - that You gave Your only begotten Son so that whosoever puts their faith in Him would be redeemed and receive eternal life? We thank You - we love You. You are the only One worthy of worship and praise. Amen.
